Pericyte physiology
WebPericytes, attached to the surface of capillaries, play an important role in regulating local blood flow. WebPericytes are centrally positioned within the neurovascular unit, contain contractile proteins, and respond rapidly to neuronal stimulation ( 18, 19 ). Despite their critical role, pericytes have been understudied in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.

WebSep 30, 2024 · Pericytes may also mediate physiological and pathological repair processes, therefore constituting potential future targets of therapy. Much of the recently gained insight into pericyte biology stems from the analysis of genetic mouse mutants. WebOct 3, 2024 · During angiogenesis, pericytes are recruited by platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) signals from the tip cells of the endothelial sprouts and PDGF-BB retained on the extracellular matrix ( 27 ), which activates multiple intracellular signaling pathways through PDGFR-β receptor on pericytes ( 570, 648 ).

Pericytes (formerly called Rouget cells) are multi-functional mural cells of the microcirculation that wrap around the endothelial cells that line the capillaries throughout the body. Pericytes are embedded in the basement membrane of blood capillaries, where they communicate with endothelial cells by means of both direct physical contact and paracrine signaling. The morphology, distributi…
